Visitors to Sorrento can catch a glimpse of the Vesuvius Volcano from the waterfront. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and covered the entire city of Pompeii with several meters of volcanic ash and pumice.
Tours to the Vesuvius Volcano are available from Sorrento. Visitors can also visit Pompeii which has been extensively excavated.
